Princess Celestia - FiMtG by Kitonin Princess Celestia - FiMtG by Kitonin
Part of the first set of My Little Pony/Magic: The Gathering cards, I decided to make.

Another Princess Celestia Planeswalker!

This Celestia is the one whose solution to any problem starts with 'Exile' and ends with 'Everything'. Then after they've had about a thousand years to think about what they've done she brings them back and they serve her.

not even an "exiled by celestia" bit for the -X. A bit broken

I like the theme of the second and third abilities, but I'm not sure how the first one comes into it, and CMC 7 with a five-color mana cost seems a bit steep. I think Celestia and her powers in the show are pretty firmly white and blue, but not much more than that... unless alicorns in general are necessarily five-color? I dunno.

If I had to choose a color for each race of ponies, I'd say unicorns are blue for their magic, earth ponies are green for their connection with plants and animals, and pegasi are... either blue for their flight and connection to the sky, or red for their general impulsiveness and connection with the unpredictable weather. (Fluttershy is a special case: [link] ) So alicorns would be U/R/G in general, then, and Celestia's benevolence makes her white while the lingering consequences of exiling her sister make her black. I could see that.

Still, seven is a lot of mana. I'd cut the colorless cost by one or two points.

Black is for selfish actions, not evil ones. Banishing Luna was still a White action, because it was ultimately for the good of the many.

I don't think I've *EVER* seen Celestia do anything selfish *or* rash. So I'd say closer to GWU--she nurtures, she rules/structures, and she perfects.

I want Celestia to be WUBRG... but at the same time I also want her to be actually usable at all. :(

Pure white may be the way to go.[link]

Oh woah, a lot of meat to this card. Love the flavour of her banishing you and then throwing you in a dungeon in the place that she banishes you to. I'd drop the 2 and cost her at WUBRG. That banishing ability should probably be a -2. The +1 is powerful but I say if you can pay wuberg you deserve to play with that kind of power. I assume her -X refers only to creatures exiled by Celestia.

That's quite an interesting card although very difficult to manage due to the 5 color requirement.

Pretty good templating here. Still improvements to be made, however.
"+1: Look at the top three cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and shuffle the rest and one card from your hand into your library.
-1: Exile target creature.
-X: You may put an exiled creature with converted mana cost X or less onto the battlefield under your control."

Solid design, but for those abilities it feels like it should not cost that ridiculous amount. Hell, Nicol Bolas was easier to play and much more powerful.

Hell, we could give her Metalcraft: Divide the exile zone into 5 sections, one for each color. Because Mirrodin has five moons.

Why? WHY NOT.

(Of course, Mirrodin's moons are also its suns, which just adds a whole level of weird to that ability...)

I would prefer them as creatures honestly...
They don't really have the ability to LEAVE the Equestria Universe and walk the Blind Eternities do they?
Also there's a reason there's never been a 5 color planeswalker (though if there was going to be one, Her Royal Majesty, The Shining Princess Celestia would be the one in my book...). There probably never will be one. It's because of the number of abilities on a planeswalker. 4 max, with Jace the Mind Sculptor. It's 3 standard. This means that two color planeswalkers need an ability for one color, and ability for another color, and an ultimate that balances both. Celestia would need 3 abilities, 2 smaller ones that dealt evenly with all 5 colors, and an ultimate that dealt evenly with all 5 colors in a game winning way.
Her first ability is distinctly blue card selection, her second ability is white creature removal, and her last ability is a colorless Karn Liberated style ability (or green ability) to put a creature onto the battlefield for free with a twinge of white because it's hitting the exile zone.

I disagree. I believe the best method of multicolour design isn't just cherry-pinking abilities from each colour, but rather creating a card that feels like a cohesive whole. Not a card where you can say "That abiltiy is colour X, this one is colour Y", but rather "This ability feels like colours X and Y".

I am inclined to agree with you. Though I don't think that multicolored planeswalker designed started leaning that way until recently (Venser the Sojourner).
The first one was Sarkhan Vol. His first ability is green, though an argument for a touch of red is possible since it gives haste.
The second ability is entirely red.
The last ability is predominantly red with a touch of green (if you could call it that).

Multi color creatures like maelstrom angel represent all colors. They can do planeswalker abilities like that, or something that focuses more on one color more than the rest.

Ergh, don't even talk to me about Alara block. That just spat in the face of good design.

Homelands was long ago, you can't blame it for being...sub-par. Alara was modern-age Magic, with 15 years of experience and lessons behind it. It has no excuse for being as terribly designed as it was.
